Lodging Review:
Royal Kona Resort
Kona, Hawaii
by
Tammie Thompson
Twenty or thirty years ago, the Royal Kona Resort must have been one esteemed resort. Perched on the edge of Kailua Bay, the Royal Kona Resort's striking architecture blends the mountains with the sea.
Today the resort is a bit tired. Utilized by several vacation package companies for large groups, rates are reasonable and amenities few. The resort's interior is well worn. Renovation is slow. Competing with the new luxury resorts on the Kohola Coast, the Royal Kona slips to average at best. But if you are looking for an affordable hotel, in a prime location, the Royal Kona shouldn't be overlooked, especially for families on the go.
We had an oceanfront room, which looked out at the Kailua Bay, with all the boats lit up at night. Outrigger canoes traversed the bay at all hours, peaceful against the incredible sunsets.
If you are into luaus, the Royal Kona is the place. If you're not, the consistent din of fire dancers, piped music and giggly tourists, can get old fast. The property's pool isn't big, but sits on a point overlooking the Kona Coast. Pretty. They have a wading pool, which is good for little ones.
Our oceanfront room was small, but the lanai offered up a great spot for grownups to hang out and have a cocktail after the kids went to bed. The room also had two sinks and small refrigerater, great for eating breakfast in.
Moderately priced, you aren't paying for the resort's interior or service, rather, the location, perched as is on the Kailua point. Plus you are in easy walking distance to a variety of kid friendly restaurants and shops.
Ask for a room in the beach building to escape the night noise. There's a laundry room located there as well.
