RENOWNED CHILDREN'S SINGER LINDA ARNOLD
CREATES 'SPLASH ZONE' CD FOR AQUARIUM EXHIBIT
Step
into the Splash Zone/Come along let's have some fun! It's a world of adventure/
Magic waits for everyone. -from "Splash Zone" title song by Linda Arnold
The jumble of life in the "Splash Zone" has been set to music by popular children's singer and composer Linda Arnold. The Monterey Bay Aquarium commissioned Arnold to create a collection of ocean songs for its new family-oriented special exhibition.
The collection of 18 songs -many with a lively calypso beat, others conveying a
haunting ocean mood - are available in a "Splash Zone" CD, both at the aquarium and through children's music outlets nationwide. Instrumental music based on the songs is also incorporated as part of the displays in this fun-filled family gallery.
Arnold, who hosts the nationally syndicated radio program, "Pickleberry Pie," has been called the "Mary Poppins of Children's Music" and the "Queen of Kid Pop." She has received many awards, including honors from Parent's Choice, the American Library Association, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Association of Parenting Publications, the American Film Institute and American Women in Radio and Television. She is known for recordings including "Peppermint Wings," "Lullaby Land," "Sing Along Stew" and "Favorites in the Key of Fun." Arnold is often featured in the Disney Channel Kaleidoscope Concert series.
For "Splash Zone,"
she has created enchanting songs about life along the rocky shores and coral reefs
and their animal inhabitants. The songs cover a variety of musical styles, including
Caribbean, Cuban and S outh
African. And keeping in line with the aquarium's mission to inspire conservation
of the oceans, a conservation message has also been woven into many "Splash Zone"
tunes.
One of the conservation songs is "I am the Rolling Sea," which asks children to
"Take care of me, for I am the sea./I speak every language, I touch every shore./I circle the Earth, I give life to all. Take care of me, for I am the rolling sea."
In her trademark whimsical fashion, Arnold has set to music the unique
adaptations of some of the animals featured in "Splash Zone," including blackfooted penguins, leafy sea dragons, even moray eels ("If it slithers inside of a crevice to hide with its mouth open wide, that's a moray. ..")
The "Splash Zone" collection also has a bilingual appeal. Two songs, "Hide and
Seek/Las escondidas" and "It's a Penguin Party/A la fiesta de pingliinos," are in sung in English and Spanish, giving children an opportunity to learn words and phrases in another language as they sing along.
The "Splash Zone" collection includes the following songs: "Splash Zone,"
"Hold On or Go with the Flow," "That's a Moray," "Nibble, Bite, Gulp or Crunch,"
"Leafy Sea Dragon Dance," "Tide Pool Heroes," "Rocky Shore Wonders," "Rocky Shore Symphony ," " Anemone," "Hide and Seek/Las escondidas," "Goin' to the Coral Reef," "I'm a Sea Star," "Rainbow City," "Let's Be Friends," "That's a Habitat," "Flying through the Sea," and "It's a Penguin Party/A la fiesta de pingliinos."
Arnold's earlier music is distributed on the Youngheart music label. A companion
songbook and children's activity book along with a "Splash Zone" cassette are published by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Press.
